Lucía Ohyama is a tango dancer, teacher, and producer with more than two decades of experience on stages and in artistic projects at both national and international levels. She has worked as a performer in companies, festivals, and training programs.

Throughout her career, she has developed a view of tango as a living language in constant transformation. Her work focuses on connection, listening, and presence, understanding tango as a tool for encountering one’s own body, emotions, and others, as well as a space for exchange and personal and collective growth.

Joaquin is a tango enthusiast and aspiring DJ from Buenos Aires. Having recently moved to Edinburgh, he is pleased to be joining the Edinburgh Tango Society.

It began as a warm feeling in my chest, as a small restless creature – trapped, aching for air. It’s hard to name it; after a while was even harder to ignore it. But somehow, it was evident: it was a call for/from tango.

To soothe this little “gremlin” inside me, I fed music first. Then videos of dances. Tango on the commute, tango in the kitchen, tango accompanying my quiet rituals and the noisy days. For a few months, I lived with this bright pressure in my ribcage, then the feeling became unbearable without action.

So, I searched “tango classes in Edinburgh“, and on 24th February 2025, I walked into my first practica. That was it. I was lifted, expanded, alive. On the journey home I couldn’t stop smiling and once I got home, the tears began to run down on my face – tears of joy and passion; something has been released; something, that finally allowed to breathe.

The flame that woke in me, has not dimmed since. Tango has made its way through my everyday life, it is part of my waking hours and my dreaming ones.

Without tango, I am no longer sure who I am or where I would place myself. But for now, I am someone who dances tango.

Dancer and DJ from Edinburgh

Eilidh has been a proud member of the Edinburgh University Tango Society for many years now, and actively involved in its organisation. Now, she’s branching out into the ETS as host too!

DJ Chimichurri was born in the UK, but earned her nickname as ‘hot’ DJ in the salons of Buenos Aires. (For the uninitiated, Chimichurri is a spicy, chilli sauce.) She has DJ-ed in well-known tango salons such as Canning, La Nacional, Las Malevas and La Mandrilera, as well as other milongas in, and far beyond, the Argentinian capital. These include the ETI, a tango festival with over 1.300 dancers ranging in age from 14 to 84; Amsterdam Tango Marathon; Las Hormigas Tango Marathon;  International Tango Biathlon; Tango Mango and Cheltenham International Tango Festival. Chimichurri plays classic tangos organised in traditional tandas alternated with valses and milongas, but occasionally she also enjoys challenging a more experienced dance public with a tanda from a contemporary orchestra, such as Romantica Milongera or Tango Bardo, who give their own interpretation to the old classics. She loves the challenge of fitting the music to the mood, and enticing as many dancers onto the floor as possible… nothing obscure or ‘interesting’, just good danceable music to make your feet itch to dance.

She is a regular DJ at the Totally-in-Tango Double-Role events and in 2018 she initiated the first regular dedicated Double-Role tango classes in Amsterdam.

Los Tauras is a Quintet headed by Carlos Quilici. They have been together for 30 years under his leadership. Combining traditional and contemporary styles, their music is not only stunning but incredibly danceable too. The arrangements they play are mostly by Carlos himself, and include some of their own compositions. A real treat for any ears!

Paul has been a member of ETS since 2010 helping with communications and our social media presence for some years.

Recently turning his hand to DJing he enjoys playing Golden Age tango in his sets.

Tango music permeated my childhood as I grew up in my grandmother’s house. Her brother was rumoured to dance an excellent European tango. On Sundays, he would frequently visit us and there was often dancing after lunch. I was mesmerised by the dancing embrace. He informed me that what I saw paled in grace and beauty compared to what he called the marvel of Argentine tango. Many years later after moving to Edinburgh, I discovered this marvel for myself and through it the embrace of the Edinburgh tango community.

I look forward to welcoming you to the Counting House Sunday milongas!

John organises the Alternative Tango milongas via Demon Dance Company in Edinburgh and also DJ’s for traditional milongas working predominantly with Tango del Jueves and Milonga del Viernes in Edinburgh and Tango Mac in Glasgow.
